SteinLib: An Updated Library on Steiner Tree Problems in Graphs MSC: 90C10; 90C27
In this paper we present the 'SteinLib', a library of data sets for the Steiner tree problem in graphs. This library extends former libraries on Steiner tree problems by many new interesting and difficult instances, most of them arising from real-world applications. We give a survey on the difficulty of these problem instances by stating references to state-of-the-art software packages that were the first or are currently among the best to solve these instances.

Average Case Complexity of Weighted Approximation and Integration over $\R_+$ We study weighted approximation and integration of Gaussian stochastic processes $X$ defined over $\R_+$ whose $r$th derivatives satisfy a Hölder condition with exponent $\beta$ in the quadratic mean. We assume that the algorithms use samples of $X$ at a finite number of points. We study the average case (information) complexity, i.e., the minimal number of samples that are sufficient to approximate/integrate $X$ with the expected error not exceeding $\e$. We provide sufficient conditions in terms of the weight and the parameters $r$ and $\beta$ for the weighted approximation and weighted integration problems to have finite complexity. For approximation, these conditions are necessary as well. We also provide sufficient conditions for these complexities to be proportional to the complexities of the corresponding problems defined over $[0,1]$, i.e., proportional to $\e^{-1/\alpha}$ where $\alpha=r+\beta$ for the approximation and $\alpha=r+\beta+1/2$ for the integration.

Uniform Stability of a Finite Difference Scheme for Transport Equations in Diffusive Regimes An asymptotic preserving numerical scheme (with respect to diffusion scalings) for a linear transport equation is investigated. The scheme is adopted from a class of schemes developped recently. Stability is proven uniformly in the mean free path under a CFL type condition turning into a parabolic CFL condition in the diffusion limit.

An explicitly solvable kinetic model for vehicular traffic and associated macroscopic equations In the present paper a kinetic model for vehicular traffic is presented and investigated in detail. For this model the stationary distributions can be determined explicitly. A derivation of associated macroscopic traffic flow equations from the kinetic equation is given. The coefficients appearing in these equations are identified from the solutions of the underlying stationary kinetic equation and are given explicitly. Moreover, numerical experiments and comparisons between different macroscopic models are presented.

In this paper we essentially classify all locally finite Lie algebras with an involution and a compatible root decomposition which permit a faithful unitary highest weight representation. It turns out that these Lie algebra have many interesting relations to geometric structures such as infinite-dimensional bounded symmetric domains and coadjoint orbits of Banach-Lie groups which are strong Kähler manifolds. In the present paper we concentrate on the algebraic strcuture of these Lie algebras, such as the Levi decomposition, the structure of the almost reductive and locally nilpotent part, and the structure action of the representation of the almost reductive algebra on the locally nilpotent ideal.
2115 01.08.2000 Alber, Hans-Dieter Existence of solutions to a class of quasi-static problems in viscoplasticity theory MSC: 35Q72; 74C10
We prove existence of solutions for quasi-static initial-boundary value problems to a class of constitutive equations with internal variables. This class consists of constitutive equations of monotone type with positive definite free energy. They model the deformation behavior of metallic bodies. The existence theorem is proved by reduction of the initial-boundary value problem to an abstract evolution equation with a time dependent maximal monotone evolution operator, and by application of known existence results for such evolution equations. The proofs are sketched. At the end an example is given for a constitutive equation satisfying the hypotheses of the existence theorem.

Sensitivity Analysis of Initial Value Problems with Error Control MSC: 65D25; 65L05; 65L07
In this article we present two FORTRAN-codes DOPRI8S and GRK4AS based on FORTRAN-subroutines for the solution of initial value problems for ordinary differential equations which calculate the sensitivity of the solution with respect to the initial values and the parameters. These subroutines compute the sensitivity by internal difference approximations. Compared to the classical external difference approximations we obtain higher accuracies and a better reliability due to error control. Moreover we can save execution time especially for implicit integration subroutines. These advantages are demonstrated by some examples.

Let $K$ be a compact Lie group and $LK := C^\infty(\SS^1, K)$ the group of smooth loops with values in $K$. This is a group under pointwise multiplication and it carries the structure of a Lie group modeled over the Fréchet space $L\k := C^\infty(\SS^1, \k)$ of smooth loops with values in the Lie algebra of $\k$. These notes grew out of a reworking of the proof of the Borel--Weil theory for loop groups as it is presented in the book of Pressley and Segal. Our main objective is to develop the techniques which are relevant for this theory in the setting of the Fréchet groups of smooth loops from an analytic point of view. We describe an intrinsic construction of the irreducible positive energy representations which does not refer to embeddings of loop groups into infinite-dimensional classical Banach Lie groups.

In this paper we discuss some of the basic general notions and results which play a key role in the representation theory of infinite-dimensional Lie groups modeled over sequentially complete locally convex spaces. In particular we deal with differentiability questions, smooth vectors, holomorphic vectors (for representations of complex groups), and with constructions of representations in spaces of holomorphic sections of line bundles.

Conceptual Knowledge Discovery and Data Analysis In this paper, we discuss Conceptual Knowledge Discovery in Databases (CKDD) in its connection with Data Analysis. Our approach is based on Formal Concept Analysis, a mathematical theory which has been developed and proven useful during the last 20 years. Formal Concept Analysis has led to a theory of conceptual information systems which has been applied by using the management system TOSCANA in a wide range of domains. In this paper, we use such an application in database marketing to demonstrate how methods and procedures of CKDD can be applied in Data Analysis. In particular, we show the interplay and integration of data mining and data analysis techniques based on Formal Concept Analysis. The main concern of this paper is to explain how the transition from data to knowledge can be supported by a TOSCANA system. To clarify the transition steps we discuss their correspondence to the five levels of knowledge representation established by R. Brachman and to the steps of empirically grounded theory building proposed by A. Strauss and J. Corbin.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the structure of the abelian group of central extensions of an infinite-dimensional Lie group in the sense of Milnor. In the Lie theoretic context, the central extensions of the Lie group $G$ by the abelian group $Z$ are those which are principal bundles. Their equivalence classes are parametrized by the abelian group $\Ext_{\rm Lie}(G,Z)$ whose structure we determine in terms of an exact sequence containing in particular the continuous Lie algebra cohomology group $H^2_c(\g,\z)$ which classifies the central extensions of the topological Lie algebra $\g$ by the abelian Lie algebra $\z$ for which there exists a continuous linear section $\g \to \hat\g$. The central piece of information are the integrability conditions for a central Lie algebra extension to integrate to a group extension in terms of objects related to the first and second homotopy groups of $G$.

Let $\l$ be a Lie algebra with a root decomposition and with semisimple commutator algebra. We assume that $\l$ has a $3$-grading compatible with the root decomposition. In this note we analyze the structure of the $2$-graded weight modules of a $3$-graded Lie algebra $\l$. The classification results for such modules play a key role in the characterization of the locally finite split Lie algebras with faithful unitary highest weight modules because they arise in the description of such Lie algebras as semidirect sums of almost reductive Lie algebras with generalized Heisenberg algebras.

We consider the nonstationary Navier-Stokes equations in a 3-dimensional aperture domain consisting of two halfspaces separated by a wall, but connected by a hole in this wall. In this special domain one has to impose an auxiliary condition to single out a unique solution. This can be done by prescribing either the flux through the hole or the pressure drop between the two halfspaces. We construct suitable Stokes operators for both of the auxiliary conditions and show that they generate holomorphic semigroups. Then we prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions as well as a maximal regularity estimate for the Stokes equations subject to one of the auxiliary conditions. For the corresponding Navier-Stokes equations we prove existence and uniqueness of local in time solutions.

In this paper we study Banach--Finsler manifolds endowed with a spray which have seminegative curvature in the sense that the corresponding exponential function has a surjective expansive differential in every point. In this context we generalize the classical theorem of Cartan--Hadamard, saying that the exponential function is a covering map. We apply this to symmetric spaces and thus obtain criteria for Banach--Lie groups with an involution to have a polar decomposition. Typical examples of symmetric Finsler manifolds with seminegative curvature are bounded symmetric domains and symmetric cones endowed with their natural Finsler structure which in general is not Riemannian.

In this article we formulate a mathematical model for the temporally evolving microstructure generated by phase changes and study the homogenization of this model. The investigations are partially formal, since we do not prove existence or convergence of solutions of the microstructure model to solutions of the homogenized problem. To model the microstructure, the sharp interface approach is used. The evolution of the interface is governed by an everywhere defined distribution partial differential equation for the characteristic function of one of the phases. This avoids the disadvantage commonly associated with this approach of an evolution equation only defined on the interface. To derive the homogenized problem, a family of solutions of the microstructure problem depending on the fast variable is introduced. The homogenized problem obtained contains a history functional, which is defined by the solution of a initial-boundary value problem in the representative volume element. In the special case of a temporally fixed microstructure the homogenized problem is reduced to an evolution equation to a monotone operator.

The Lattice of Concept Graphs of a Relationally Scaled Context The aim of this paper is to contribute to Data Analysis by clarifying how concept graphs may be derived from data tables. First it is shown how, by the method of relational scaling, a many-valued data context can be transformed into a power context family. Then it is proved that the concept graphs of a power context family form a lattice which can be described as a subdirect product of specific intervals of the concept lattices of the power context family (each extended by a new top-element). How this may become practical is demonstrated using a data table about the domestic flights in Austria. Finally, the lattice of syntactic concept graphs over an alphabet of object, concept, and relation names is determined and related to the lattices of concept graphs of the power context families which are semantic models of the given contextual syntax.

Scattering of Acoustical and Electromagnetic Waves by some Canonical Obstacles {\em A. Sommerfeld} published in 1896 his habilitation thesis studying the diffraction of plane time--harmonic acoustical waves by a half--plane or a wedge. He used series expansions and reformulation by integrals. These {\em Sommerfeld integrals} where systematically used by Russian authors. Their approach is called the {\em Maliushinets method}. Western authors use preferably the {\em Wiener--Hopf method}, based on the Fourier transforms and {\em symbol factorization} of the related boundary integral equations. Many new results, including electromagnetic and elastodynamic waves with different kind of boundary conditions, different media, plane surfaces, and aperiodic initial boundary conditions, using generalized eigenfunction expansions, have been achieved during the last decade. Still a lot of open problems exist. The paper reports on more recent results obtained together with coworkers.

The simulation of pantograph and catenary: a PDAE approach MSC: 65M99; 65L05
Recently, the coupled dynamical simulation of pantograph and catenary in high speed trains has found much interest. The equations of motion form a partial differential-algebraic equation (PDAE) that combines a partial differential equation (PDE) for the catenary and a differential-algebraic equation (DAE) for the pantograph. In the present paper we discuss the relation of this PDAE model to current work on the analysis of PDAE's and formulate a benchmark problem to stimulate further research on this topic. The benchmark problem is solved numerically using a semi-discretization in space (by finite elements or finite differences). For time discretization, typical DAE techniques are applied (index reduction, projection steps, handling of systems with varying structure).

Viscoplastic Deformation from the DAE Perspective – a Benchmark Problem MSC: 65M99; 65L05
Viscoplastic deformation is characterized by a combined system of balance and evolution equations. The application of the Finite Element Method results in a Differential-Algebraic Equation (DAE) in time. The paper summarizes the most important points of the mathematical model and presents a benchmark problem for numerical comparisons. As computational example, the BDF-2 method with stepsize control is applied.

On Computing Smooth Solutions of DAE's for Elastic Multibody Systems MSC: 65L05; 65M99
Multibody systems are considered which involve combinations of rigid and elastic bodies. Discretizations of the PDEs, describing the elastic members, lead to a semidiscrete system of ODEs or DAEs. Asymptotic methods are introduced which provide a theoretical basis of various known engineering results for the ODE case. These results are then extended to the DAE case by means of suitable local ODE representations. The recently developed MANPAK algorithms for computations on implicitly defined manifolds form the basic tools for a computational method which provides consistent approximate solutions of the semidiscrete DAE that satisfy all constraints and are close to the smooth motion and an average solution. Several numerical examples indicate the effectiveness of this asymptotic method for elastic multibody systems.

Mechanical Multibody Systems with Deformable Components MSC: 65M99; 65L05

The multibody system approach provides enhanced models of vehicles, robots, and air- and spacecrafts. Mixed systems consisting of both rigid and deformable bodies are aimed at growing demands for refined simulation. A basic modeling framework for this class of mechanical systems is presented which covers also inelastic material behavior. Moreover, the Differential-Algebraic Equations (DAEs) obtained from semidiscretization in space are classified and the application of DAE solvers is discussed. Two examples illustrate the simulation tasks and show the state-of-the-art in this field of scientific computing.

Therefore, concept graphs are introduced as syntactical constructs, and their semantics is defined based on relational contexts. For this contextual logic, a sound and complete system of inference rules is presented and a standard graph is introduced that entails all concept graphs being valid in a given relational context. A possible use for conceptual knowledge representation and processing is suggested.
