At TU Darmstadt, the Master's degree is regarded as the standard degree, so we strongly recommend that all Bachelor's graduates continue their studies on a Master's programme.

If you would like to complete your Master's degree in Darmstadt, please note our admission requirements, which are based on the study programme of our Bachelor's degree course.

Prerequisites

The Master's degree programme in Mathematics generally requires a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics of at least six semesters with a final thesis. As a rule, this degree should have been obtained within 8 semesters and not more than 5 years ago. In terms of content, knowledge is required to the same extent as can be acquired in the Bachelor's degree programme in Mathematics at the Technical University of Darmstadt. In particular, the compulsory area of the (relevant) Bachelor's degree programme and at least 3 courses from the 3rd year of study should be covered. If the required prerequisites are not fully met, applicants may be rejected or may only be able to study with conditions and restrictions in their choice of degree programme.

Apart from the case of consecutive continuation of a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics obtained at TU Darmstadt, it is always the chairperson of the examination board who decides on admission to the Master's programme and possible conditions. The enrolment procedure is explained below.

For admission to the Master’s degree programme in Mathematics, the applicants must provide proof for their entrance competencies based on the chosen field of study (Studienrichtung).

For the contents of the respective courses please see the module handbook.

Bachelor's – Master's transition

If it is foreseeable that you will successfully complete your Bachelor's degree as a Bachelor's student and would like to enrol in a Master's degree programme for the upcoming winter semester (summer semester), you can apply for the Master's degree programme by 31 August (1 March). The following applies:

  • Bachelor's degree obtained outside TU Darmstadt: Regular application with all required documents.
  • Bachelor's degree obtained at TU Darmstadt: Simplified application with an extended deadline of 15 September(15 March). At the same time as the online application, a request for degree certificate must be submitted to the Office of Student Affairs to ensure a smooth transition to the Master's programme.
  • Important: After the online application, you will receive the form for confirmation by the department from TUCaN. Please submit this to us without being asked. Otherwise the transfer to the Master's programme cannot take place!

If you have not completed your Bachelor's degree programme by the end of the above application deadline, you must still submit an application for a Master's degree programme. You will then have to re-register for the Bachelor's programme as usual, but will be transferred to the Master's programme if you submit your degree by 5 November (5 May). If the assessment of certain performances has not yet been completed by 5 November (5 May), it is sufficient for the examiners to make a written and binding declaration that the respective examination performance will be assessed with “at least 4” (a fail must be excluded). If such a declaration is submitted by the deadline, the transfer to the Master's programme can take place. As the data must be passed on and processed internally, please note that all examination results (in particular the Bachelor's thesis and, if applicable, a corresponding “at least 4” certificate) must be submitted to the Student Administration Office by 15 October (or 15 April) in order to guarantee the transfer to the Master's programme.

If you have any further questions, please contact the Office for Student Affairs.

For further information on the application procedure, please visit the website of the International Department.

Once we have received your written application package, we will formally check whether you fulfil the requirements for the study programme.

The decision as to whether you will be admitted is made by a selection committee which may decide that you will only be admitted subject to certain conditions. This means you may be required to catch up on areas you have not yet studied (no more than 30 CPs) by the end of the Master’s programme.

Please note that a degree in non-mathematical subjects (no matter if Bachelor or Master) usually does not qualify for a Master's programme in Mathematics at TU Darmstadt. If you are unsure, please contact the .

If you are not sure if you are eligible for a Master of Science in Mathematics, we recommend the Online Self-Assessment.

FAQ about the application process

Please read the information on the form carefully. You find all information there. For filling out the table it is helpful to have your latest transcript of records as well as module handbook/syllabus/course descriptions at hand. Please note the course names or numbers how they can be found on the transcript and see on which page they can be found in the module handbook.

Please have in mind that incomplete forms will defer the evaluation process of your application and can lead to denial of your application.

You are more than welcome to create your own table and add it to your application.

Unfortunately, no. Due to the amount of applications this is not possible. If you have completed the form according to the information on the document, you can be relatively sure that there will be no problems. If we have questions during the evaluation process, we will contact you.

A module handbook can also be called syllabus and is usually a document containing the course descriptions of the courses/modules of your study programme.

At the end of the digital application process you will be able to print certain documents. On the cover letter you find the address where to send the documents to. Make sure your documents are complete! Incomplete applications will lead to deferral of the evaluation process or to denial of your application. Please keep an eye on the application portal. There you will receive important information regarding your application.

You will find a list of the required documents in the application portal, but also on our website.

From filling out the application form in the portal to the final decision it may take up to eight weeks. Sending the documents by post can take a few weeks (depending on how and from where you are sending), as well as the formal and subject-specific evaluation.

We ask you kindly to have patience and to refrain from asking for updates on your application.

Please have a look at this website for all information regarding application.

Please apply via www.tucan.tu-darmstadt.de. If you have problems with the portal, please click on “Help” and follow the instructions.

The course catalogue for the following semester opens on September 1st for a winter semester and on March 1st for a summer semester. On our website you can find the course planning for the next two semesters.

You find all information regarding enrolment on your admission letter from the department of international admissions. Please follow those instructions. If you have questions, please contact the contact on the admission letter.

If you have received your school leaving certificate in Germany and/or have done your bachelor’s degree at TU Darmstadt, you do not have to fill in the table of equivalence. Your transcript of records is sufficient.

As a student of TU Darmstadt changing programmes to the Master’s, please send the form “Bestätigung des zuständigen Fachbereichs” to the office for student affairs via the contact form on our website.
