Registration for Examination performances, study performances and modules

Special features according to module and examination form

On this page you will find the registration and de-registration modalities for exams as well as different module forms. We also provide information on the obligation to submit doctor's certificates. From now on, those certificates can also be submitted via an online form. If you have any questions, please contact the study office at any time.

General Information

Please note that different study offices may be responsible for you in your study regulations.

In the degree programme for teaching at grammar schools, the study office of your chosen second subject is added to the Office for student affairs for mathematics. In addition, the Centre for Teacher Education (“Vernetzungsbereich”) and the Department of Human Sciences are responsible for you because of the “Grundwissenschaften” (Pedagogics, Psychology).

In the Master of Education, only the Office for student affairs mathematics is responsible.

Registration for examinations

Attention: The examination registration periods of the Department of Mathematics may differ from those of other departments!

Registration for study and examination achievements takes place at the corresponding registration periods (see Dates and Deadlines ) via the electronic campus management system TUCaN.

Please read this help and FAQ on TUCaN!

Please note: If you want to register for the subject examination or course work of a module that spans several semesters (combination modules, Linear Algebra (for the teaching profession), Analysis (MEd)), it may be necessary to first switch to the semester in which the module was registered.

If you have any further questions, please contact the Office for student affairs .

De-registration from examinations

Withdrawal from examinations is generally possible up to 8 days before the respective examination date.

You can de-register from written examinations online via TUCaN.

For oral examinations, please contact the Office for Student Affairs using the contact form. If you do not de-register in time and do not take the examination, the examination will be graded as “failed”.

When cancelling oral examinations, please always inform your examiner.

Withdrawel due to illness

You submit your sickness notification electronically to us in the study office via the online form within 3 days of the examination date.

For students in the M.Ed., this also applies if the examination takes place in another department.

When submitting the illness note, please state your matriculation number as well as the name and date of the examination.

If the diagnosis is noted on your illness note, please black it out before submitting it.

Notifications of illness or certificates of incapacity for work must be submitted to the Centre for Teacher Education regarding the network area.

Illness leave or certificates of incapacity for work concerning mathematics lectures can be submitted to your mathematics study office via the contact form .

Please submit illness notifications or certificates of incapacity for work in the basic sciences or in the second subject to the respective Office for student affairs.

In the case of lecture modules, you must also register for the study achievement of the relevant module in addition to the examination , provided that the module contains a study achievement. When registering in TUCaN, you can see which modules also include a study achievement in addition to the examination.

Generally applies:

  • LaG: All compulsory lecture modules, compulsory elective modules and combined modules contain a study achievement.
  • M.Ed.: Analysis, Stochastics (compulsory), Mathematical Complement I+II (compulsory elective) contain a study achievement.

Please note that registration for the study achievement is also necessary even if the lecturer does not check it (as a rule x percent of the homework) separately.

Important: In contrast to the examination, it is only possible to take the study achievement in the semester in which the course takes place.

Once you yourself have registered for the module and the relevant classes, you are not required to additionally register examination credits via TUCaN. Registration is automatic when a pass is entered.

For oral examinations in mathematics please initially register for the exam during the registration period via TUCaN. Please ask your examiner about the time and the procedure in which examination dates are set until the end of the lecture period.

Please differentiate between the following oral examinations for the procedure of scheduling dates.

Mathematics students are eligible to make a third attempt at an examination by sitting an oral examination even if oral examinations are not on offer in the respective semester. This is, however, only possible if the examiner is willing to hold this oral examination.

N.B.: In the case of a third attempt (oral), the student forfeits the right to a supplementary oral examination.

Steps to register a third attempt (oral):

1. Registration for written examination via TUCaN

2. Application for a third attempt (oral) at the Office for Student Affairs, so that an extra examination date can be arranged with the examiner.

3. Submission of completed registration, including the date of the extra examination, eight days before the earlier of the following dates at the latest:

  • the standard (written) examination date
  • the actual date of the extra (oral) examination

Registration must be submitted to the Office for Student Affairs; examination registration will then be amended on TUCaN accordingly.

The combi examination covers two teaching modules, so you are not required to register for and take individual exams or accrue credits. The contents of both modules will be examined in a joint oral examination.

You should register for the examination in the combi module during the semester in which the final part of the combi module is taken.

If part of the combi module is recognised (e.g. double degree B.Sc.), please contact the Office for Student Affairs.

You can register and be examined on modules that are not a component of your standard programme of study. On application to the Office for Student Affairs, credits from so-called additional voluntary electives can be included on a separate credit list; the credit points and any grade awarded will not count towards your degree. Normally, you do not have the right to apply for the results of an examination that has been taken as an additional voluntary elective to be recognised subsequently for your ongoing or a later degree.

Recognition LaG

Recognition for students of the degree programme Teacher Training at Grammar Schools is subject to a procedural process. On the website of the Centre for Teacher Education you will find the exact procedure description.

Recognition M.Ed.

Achievements from previous studies can possibly be recognised for your current studies. Please feel free to contact us about this.

The Office for Student Affairs will provide you with a recognition form. Please submit this form to the Office for Student Affairs together with the relevant evidence of the academic achievements you have already completed.

Your application will then be submitted to the Examination Board for Teacher Education for review. The staff of the Office of Student Affairs will then record the achievements to be recognised in TUCaN.

If you have made two failed attempts at an elective module you are not necessarily forced to complete the module; instead, you can replace it with a different module. (The relevant alteration in the General Examination Regulations, 5th amendment, was introduced on 1.10.2015.)

It refers to modules in

  • compulsory electives in mathematics (B.Sc.)
  • compulsory electives in Ü (B.Sc.)
  • the supplementary mathematical area (M.Sc.)
  • Studium Generale (B.Sc./M.Sc.)
  • Elective General Modules (B.Sc./M.Sc.)
