Orientation programmes for first-year students

Exciting events around your studies

Our range of events starts even before you start your studies, e.g. with the orientation week. But we also accompany you beyond that with exciting and informative events from your choice of specialisation to your first job.

Orientation Week

Orientation Week (OWO) – the week immediately before the start of lectures in the first semester – is one of the most important components of a successful start to a degree programme.

Every year, thanks to the great commitment of its student union the department helps its first-semester students to get off to a successful, fun and enjoyable start to their maths studies during Orientation Week (OWO). Before the first lectures begin, all the important information about studying mathematics is provided, and there is also the opportunity to get to know professors, staff and older students. There is also always an up-to-date information brochure, the OWO-Info (opens in new tab).

Elective orientation days

Midway through the Bachelor’s programme, mandatory elective days help students choose their mandatory elective modules and deliver information on the various specialisations in the consecutive Bachelor’s-Master’s study programme.

In cooperation with the Departmental Students’ Representative Committee, Mandatory elective days (WOrT) are held every semester. See also the Departmental Students’ Representative Committee webpage.

WOrT particularly address students in the fourth semester, informing them about continuing activities in the Bachelor’s-Master’s programme: lectures and a research group fair present the structure and contents of mandatory elective modules and the subsequent specialisations at Master’s level; small groups help with preparing an examination plan.

Mentoring programme for first-year students

For students in their first semesters, it is often difficult to find a suitable solution to difficulties or uncertainties. In addition, students often want qualified advice on personal study planning that goes beyond what can be provided by the student advisory service and student council. It is also important to bring students into personal contact with professors at an early stage, which encourages them to get to know each other on the one hand, but also to identify their interests in the various areas of mathematics on the other.

For this reason, all mathematics students in their first semester have been assigned a university lecturer from the Department of Mathematics as a mentor and experienced students for 20 years now. The mentors and the experienced students are available as contact persons for individual questions regarding study planning and offer support with regard to a targeted degree programme. Students and mentors meet regularly to discuss specific topics (e.g. exam preparation) and, of course, on specific occasions. The mentoring groups are formed during the orientation week.

Details of the mentoring programme can be found in the concept (opens in new tab).

By the way, the department is always looking for motivated and experienced students who would like to become mentors. If you are interested, please contact the study coordinator Ms Seeberg. .

Welcome, Masters!

This information event takes place annually shortly before the start of lectures in April and is aimed at all new national and international Master's students who are starting their studies with us in the summer semester. New Master's students who have completed their Bachelor's degree at our department are also very welcome.

During the half-day event, students will receive information about the degree programmes offered by the department, insights into the examination regulations and assistance in drawing up examination and timetables.

Students will receive a written invitation by email in good time. Further information can also be found on thewebsite.

Students starting their studies with us in the winter semester will receive all the information during the orientation week.

Study abroad

Twice a year (May and October), the International Coordinator organises an information event on studying abroad. The lecture is primarily aimed at students from the 3rd semester onwards (earliest time of application), but 1st year students are welcome to attend.

Participating students will receive information on study programmes abroad, formal requirements, application, financial matters and much more.

Further information can also be found here.

Money and Housing Weekend

In addition to the Orientation Week, the Mathematics Student Council organises the popular Money and Housing Weekend, the GeWoWe, before the start of the semester and even before the OWO. Here you not only get to know your new fellow students, but also learn a lot of interesting facts about finances and housing during your studies.

Online pre-course

To make it easier for you to start your degree programme and slowly get used to university learning, the Department of Mathematics offers online mathematics pre-courses in which you can refresh your mathematical knowledge and close any gaps. These pre-courses start around five weeks before the start of the semester. The courses are purely online without compulsory attendance.

Maths today, tomorrow … ?

The event series “Maths today, tomorrow …?” is very popular at the department.

Every semester, we invite former maths students to talk to interested students and academic staff about their careers. There is a wide range of careers that maths students can pursue after graduating: from a career at university to management consultancy and software development.

The university itself also offers orientation programmes for students:
