Opening colloquium of the LOEWE research unit

Date and Location

February 2, 2018.
TU Darmstadt, Hochschulstraße 4, Uhrturmgebäude S2|08, Hörsaal 171.

3:45 pm: Welcome by the chairman of the department of mathematics, Prof. Dr. Frank Aurzada.

3:50 pm: Prof. Dr. Don Zagier (Max Planck Institute for Mathematics, Bonn):
Modular forms and mock modular forms in physics.

4:50 pm: Coffee break.

5:30 pm: Prof. Dr. Steve Kudla (University of Toronto):
Arithmetic theta series.

Don Zagier: TBA.

Steve Kudla: In this talk I will give a survey of the evolution of the theory of theta series through three stages: classical theta series, geometric theta series and finally arithmetic theta series. I hope to show that the arithmetic theory, which is still largely conjectural, develops in a natural way from more classical cases. Time permitting, I will finish with a discussion of some open problems.
