Application and admission

Mathematical admission requirements

The programme Master of Education builds on a Bachelor of Education, in which a vocational specialisation has been studied, but also mathematics and didactics to the extent of 20 CP. The following modules are required

  • Linear Algebra (for B. Ed.) (specialized science, 10 CP)
  • Fundamentals of teaching and learning mathematics (specialised didactics, 10 CP)

Career changers from technical degree programmes with professional experience are possible.

Admission subject to conditions

If you have not taken the two modules mentioned above in a previous degree programme, you can still be admitted. You may then have to catch up on the above-mentioned content in addition to the coursework included in the M.Ed. programme (as so-called “requirements”).

You are a career changer with a technical degree

In addition to requirements from the pedagogy and didactics of your professional specialisation, you will receive the module

  • Linear Algebra (for B. Ed.) (10 CP)

as requirement. We recommend that you also acquire knowledge of the didactics of mathematics. On application, the advanced module “Subject-related didactic project” (6 CP) can be replaced by the basic module “Teaching and learning mathematics” (6 CP, small version of the 10 CP module).

You have completed a B.Ed. (PO 2014) at the TU Darmstadt

If you have not completed the two modules mentioned above, you must complete both modules as requirements.

You have completed a B.Ed. (PO 2005) at the TU Darmstadt

You will be admitted without conditions. However, we recommend that you complete the above-mentioned modules voluntarily, as they provide important basic knowledge for the M.Ed. programme. On application, the advanced module “Subject-related didactic project” (6 CP) can be replaced by the basic module “Teaching and learning mathematics” (6 CP, small version of the 10 CP module). Prior knowledge of mathematics acquired in the B.Ed. programme can be credited (see also: General information of the ZfL on transition regulations). Please contact the Study counselling Mathematics to clarify eligibility in individual cases.

If you have completed a Bachelor of Education at another university or are planning a lateral entry from professional practice, it is best to seek advice from the Zentrum für Lehrkräftebildung (center for teacher education) and the study councelling Mathematics .
