A doctorate is the door to an academic career. After completing a Diplom, Master’s or Teaching degree, the department offers particularly gifted graduates who are capable of conducting independent academic work the opportunity to take a doctorate in sciences (Dr rer. nat) or in engineering (Dr Ing). The formal prerequisite is that you are accepted as a doctoral candidate by the department’s Doctoral Committee.
The most important part of a doctorate is the thesis, that is, the doctoral dissertation. Once you have submitted your thesis (and received a positive) assessment, you will have to sit a doctoral examination (doctoral viva). You will be given content support by a professorial supervisor from one of the research fields represented in the Department of Mathematics.
Details can be found in TU Darmstadt’s Doctoral Regulations and theSpecial Provisions of the Department of Mathematics relating to TU Darmstadt’s aforementioned Doctoral Regulations.
Apart from doctoral supervision by a professor you will also receive support, for example at regular workshops for doctoral candidates run by INGENIUM and the Center for Educational Development and Technology.
Tip: If you are admitted to study for a doctorate at TU Darmstadt, you can apply to enrol as a doctoral student and continue to enjoy the advantages of being a student (e.g. semester ticket). See the infos under Student Services.
