Prof. Dr. Daniel Ueltschi, University of Warwick, UK

The description of magnetism, and other phenomena in condensed matter physics, involves the study of many, many interacting quantum particles. One needs the tools of statistical mechanics, and one also needs to introduce simplified models, such as the Ising or Heisenberg models. These models have fascinating structures and they necessitate a broad range of mathematical tools: analysis, combinatorics, algebra, probability theory, functional analysis, …
I will describe the background and explain some of the main questions and results, mainly of a probabilistic nature.
