Tournament rules
The tournament was held as five rounds Swiss, where in each round there were
two games with reversed colors. Each win scored three points, a draw
one point. At the end, direct comparison was used as tie-break
criterion.
"Dame" Applet
With the following applet you can compete against any of the programs.
Please select an opponent (they are in order of the tournament
classification) and click Action->Start.
Some of the computer players print information about their analysis of
the current position. To see it please open the Java console.
"Dame" (pronounce: "DAH-meh") rules
Since there are no official German rules for checkers, below are some
indications of the rules used by the applet. They are very close
to the (official) Spanish rules.
- German checkers -- like International, Russian and pool checkers
-- has ranging (or long) kings that move like
bishops in chess.
- When a king captures a piece it can land on any vacant
square behind the jumped piece. However, if it is possible to
land on a square from where further captures are possible, then
this must be done. For kings, as for men, capture chains cannot be
aborted prematurely.
Note that we do not have the rule that a king must
land on the square directly behind a captured piece. This rule
is used in some regions in Germany.
- If there are several captures, then the player is free to choose
any of them, even if some of them capture more, or more valuable
pieces.
- Men cannot capture backwards. When a man reaches the last rank,
then he is crowned and has to stop.
